"Awake to a New Aurora" Mural Unveiling

A portion of the "Awake to a New Aurora" mural.

You are invited to join Aurora area neighbors on Tuesday, March 23 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for the unveiling of the latest Aurora mural!

The mural, which is the first of two joint mural projects initiated by Sustainable Green Lake, Greenwood Aurora Involved Neighbors (GAIN), and the City of Seattle, will be revealed along with free pizza, soda, and a meet-and-greet with the artists in its storefront location at 7615 Aurora Avenue.

The theme of the mural is, "Awake to a New Aurora," depicting "a vibrant scene transitioning from green space to a rising sun backdropped with the downtown cityscape view as you go over the Aurora Bridge," the group's press release stated.  The mural, created by the increasingly omnipresent team of Zach Bohnenkamp, John Osgood and Kevin Sullivan from Seattle Mural Art, is part of an effort by area businesses and neighbors to "envision Aurora as a street full of thriving businesses and shoppers – one with a vibrant business center that attracts local residents to walk and bike to stores and restaurants for their weekly shopping and entertainment."

Funding for the project, modeled after a similar Columbia City area project in the 1990s with its use of empty storefronts, was received from the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and GAIN.

Andy Leong, owner of the storefront where the mural will be installed was enthusiastic about the project: “This is a great project bringing together artists, community groups and businesses to improve Aurora."

A location for the second mural is still being sought.
