Cyndy's Property to Become Affordable Housing Development

Seattle's Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) has begun notifying north Seattle residents and businesses that they will be developing affordable housing where Cyndy's House of Pancakes, which almost became a strip club last fall, is currently located.  DESC will be hosting an informational meeting for neighbors on Wednesday, June 9.

According to the notification letter and flyer:

DESC is working on a future affordable housing development in the North Aurora Ave neighborhood, located at 10507 Aurora Ave North, at N 105th Street.  Our plans are not to make changes to the existing use before the summer of 2011, when a new building would be constructed.  When complete, DESC will own and operate 80-90 studio units of affordable housing with supportive services and indoor/outdoor community spaces for men and women who are homeless and disabled...

DESC invites you to an Informational Forum about new affordable housing project under development with supportive services for homeless disabled men and women to be built at 10507 Aurora Avenue North.

Wednesday, June 9.  6:00 - 7:30 PM

10507 Aurora Ave. North (Cyndy's House of Pancakes)

refreshments will be provided

Staff from DESC will share details and answer questions about this new project.

Contact DESC's Administrative Services Director, Nicole Macri, at nmacri@desc.org or 20-515-1514, and/or Jessica Cohen, Housing Developer, at jcohen@desc.org or 206-515-1522.

Sorry to see it go....
Cyndy's is our favorite breakfast place - I realize the need for homeless shelters, but sorry to see it go - you'd think with all the vacant/derelict properties on Aurora they could find somewhere else for a location.....

Yeah, but...
I think Cyndy's wants out which is why it was almost sold into a strip club. It'll be a little sad to see it go but I'd WAY more behind this change as opposed to the alternative.

I lived at the DESC over a year and i learned one very important thing.... all of the staff at the DESC are liars. Do not trust one word they say. They target their clients with unfair accusations and creating a very tense enviroment. They staff at the DESC depend on "snithes" (which are usually the pedofiles) to gain information and treat the clients with disdain and with no respect. The program manager Lisa clearly has a substance abuse problem, and yet she is still in charge of the day to day of the DESC. Do people in this neighborhood really want a bunch of drug addicts, drunks and pedofiles in their neighborhood?

RE: desc
I'd love to hear some more details about your story. I haven't had much first-hand experience with DESC, but I've been VERY impressed with everything I've seen and heard, and I'm convinced they're doing a great service to the city by taking on the hard cases that no one else is willing to touch.

I'm curious if what you saw as "disdain" was a case manager trying to show some "tough love" to a population that sometimes can be very challenging to get through to.

I'd love to hear your story, but without the details, you just sound like someone who's bitter for being "snitched" on.

please read what was written. Nowhere in the comment did i say i was snitched on i said the clients were being snitched on and the staff of the DESC use these snitches to manipulate and unjustly accuse clients. Which in turn creates an poisoned enviroment. Furthermore, how the staff of the DESC presents themselves to "company" and what actually happens there are completely different. I have stories of clients being ignored when they are injured, i have stories of clients having their belongings stolen, and i have stories of how inept the staff is. Interested??? I think the people of this neighborhood have a right to know that the people from the DESC are not only mentally ill they usually have substance abuse and chemical dependancy problems and a good portion of the male population are pedofiles. And the DESC does not encourage these guys to stop drinking or doing their drugs. I was shocked when during my first week at the DESC the women's rest room was a "shooting gallery" and its not only tolerated but encouraged.

RE: desc
I do appreciate your concern for the neighborhood. And, as I said, my experience with DESC is limited, so I'm trying to piece an impression together from what I have seen and heard. I understand the controversy surrounding their "housing first" model, but I'm not prepared to accept that this is tantamount to encouraging drug use. You'll have to forgive my incredulity if their practices are as horrific as you imply -- chalk it up to ignorance on my part!

At any rate, thanks for sharing. I encourage anyone else to share their experiences as well, as the conversation about this proposed development continues.

Drug services
I was at the community meeting, and the staff was very unwilling to talk about what goes on there, like they had a lto to hide. Several people tried to find out what services would be offered to whom, and were basically told to sit down and be quiet, that this meeting was ONLY to look at the design of the building, and decide if they should put a smooth wall or an indented wall in the buildng.

I was especially concerned when the director was asked point blank if there would be criminals, felons, and sex offenders and his waffling answer was that he didn't want them there. Well, that's no answer. He wasn't asked if he wanted them there, he asked if they would BE there. Plus, if they are providing drug services to the general pubic, does that mean that there will be drug addicts from all over the city hanging out at the Oat Tree Cinema and Starbucks?

I'm sure the businesses there would love to know that.
